Before moving into a downsized home from an earlier, 15,000-square-foot connected house – one of the first that technology firm Logic Integration of Lone Tree, Colo., had outfitted in 2003 – these repeat clients engaged the company once again for a technology system in that new property near the Club at Ravenna golf course in Littleton, Colo.

While the clients were familiar with home technology, explained Tyler Bogart, Logic Integration’s vice president of business development, “we had to make sure to engineer the system to be functional but also user-friendly, and make sure that the complexities that come with a fully connected smart home were easily translated to anyone who is not super-savvy.” They also wanted to make sure the new system would be capable of controlling not only the entire tech environment, but also contain just the right mix of products to satisfy the owners’ love of quality audio – and the audio needed to be available throughout the property. So these owners, familiar with the integrator’s expertise and capabilities, decided to rely on Logic Integration’s advice to fully design, engineer, and implement the new home system.

Their previous system was primarily a large distributed A/V system. This go-round, they wanted the new system to control lighting, HVAC and window treatments, and also handle access control and security. The idea behind downsizing the home was to increase the convenience of their home life, so the system needed to meet these criteria.

“Audio/video distribution was very important, as they love their music and love entertaining,” said Bogart. With that in mind, Logic Integration installed a 5x10 video distribution system and a 12-zone audio system. The client’s earlier residence had a full-fledged home theater, and in this new home, even though it was downsized, the clients “wanted areas for entertainment, billiards, and so on,” said Bogart.

Optimizing Shading for the Mountain Views

Motorized shades were very important as well, and over 20 windows in the home include them.

The vicinity of the Club at Ravenna is known for its incredible mountain vistas and is nestled in a valley in the foothills of The Rockies. So having the ability to open all the shades simultaneously to expose the beautiful mountain views was important to these clients as well, he said. Over 70 loads of lighting are also controlled throughout the home to set the perfect mood.

Outdoor living is also a big source of the homeowners’ leisure entertainment. This home has a significantly smaller outdoor living space compared to their previous home, but the views are breathtaking. In order to preserve the view while also providing the level of A/V entertainment they were looking for, Logic Integration worked closely with the trim carpenter to ensure that a custom-built TV box that matched the slanted tongue-in-groove ceiling of their back patio would also match the wood-finished ceiling. A motorized lift was installed in this box. “We used a Sony TV outside, which was fine since the TV was going to be protected in the weatherproof box,” Bogart said. The TV completely disappears when not in use and the beautiful views are unobstructed – an ideal compromise. “This gave them the ability to have entertainment outdoors but also to kick back and watch TV without having a big TV hanging from a ceiling or permanently on a wall,” said Bogart.

One specific client activity accommodated in the new home – regular exercise – is the gym area, scaled down from the previous residence yet large enough to provide the homeowner a space to work out. The area has both a TV, and a mirror wall that opens up the space. And since the clients requested a working-from-home area (even before COVID-19 struck), a home office includes enhanced functionality, designed as it is with a small video conferencing center.

One challenge was having to calibrate a proper surround sound system in a living room with a sloped ceiling. “So we used a Leon Speakers Horizon custom sound bar that matches the width of their 85-inch living room TV for really high-quality sound bar audio,” Bogart said. In the lower level of the home, a full surround-sound system was installed. And for outdoor sound, the way the area was configured allowed Logic Integration to cleverly position two additional in-ceiling speakers facing the seating area.

Bogart said the overarching pride his firm felt in completing the project was in how they skillfully managed the dynamic of the owners “between two ends of a spectrum so that everyone was proud of the result… We were able to create a more complex tech environment than merely audio and video, and we had to keep it simple enough so that both clients could use the technologies – all while meeting budget guidelines, while at the same time, articulating the technology’s value to them. Having a longstanding relationship like we had with these clients, and having them be as happy as they were with the result, is a huge achievement.”

Bogart added that working on this project also engendered a solid relationship with the builder, via the architect, who relied on the builder to select the right tech companies to partner with. “The builder took a very collaborative approach and made sure that what we needed was achieved by the other trades involved, such as electricians and mechanical… “It has led to a lot of really good opportunities,” Bogart said.
